Himachal Pradesh CM Inaugurates 2 Projects constructed by HCC
September 11, 2017 The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Virbhadra Singh dedicated to nation two hydro power projects constructed by HCC in Himachal Pradesh. The 100 MW Sainj Hydro Power Project (HEP) was inaugurated on September 11, 2017 while the first stage of Kashang Hydro Power Project was inaugurated on September 12, 2017.

Both the projects were awarded to HCC by the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL). The Sainj Hydro Power Project was awarded on EPC basis in August 2010, and the Kashang Hydro Power Project was awarded as item rate contract in February 2009.

These projects are registered as ‘Green Power Project’ under the clean development mechanism. HPPCL was conferred with Greentech Environment Award-2015 for good environmental management at the Sainj Hydro Power Project.

The Sainj Hydro Power Project is located in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. It is the third project on the river Sainj which is a tributary of Beas River. This is the first project undertaken by HPPCL which will evacuate 400 KV power directly on the power grid network and 400 KV gas insulated switchgear. The power generation from this project will be fed into the northern region grid through ‘loop in loop out’ arrangement with other hydel power projects on river Sainj.

The impounding of water in the reservoir was started in the first week of March 2017, followed by testing of the hydraulic component consisting of a barrage, desilter, HRT, Surge Shaft and pressure shaft. The water was released for various tests conducted at the powerhouse. The first unit of 50 MW was commissioned on April 25, 2017, and the entire project was commissioned on September 11, 2017.

Being in remote areas, accessibility to various project fronts was a big challenge. The finished diameter of the 6.3 km long HRT was 3.85 m. In such a small diameter tunnel vehicular movement and crossings are restricted and carrying out multifarious activities of concrete lining posed a severe challenge due to congested working space. HCC team prevailed over these challenges by adopting long distance concrete pumping for concrete lining work of HRT. A world record in long distance concrete pumping was created by HCC team on February 26, 2014, by successfully pumping concrete for a distance of 2432 m.

The Kashang Hydro Power project is an integrated hydro power project, built on Kashang river, a tributary of Sutlej. This project comprises of four distinct stages, of which, HCC was awarded the contract to build sections of stage I, II and III totalling to 195 MW. All four stages of the Integrated Kashang HEP would generate 1659 GWh energy annually on 90% dependability

HCC was responsible for the civil works comprising river diversion, intake structure, conveyance channel, de-silting basins, power channel, head race tunnel, underground balancing reservoir, pressure shaft, the valve chamber and various adits.

During the course of work, the project team faced several technical challenges due to unpredictable geology and inconsistency of the rock mass of this region. There were several events of landslides, stone shooting and flash-floods that hindered the progress of the project. The project site was hit by huge avalanches during the month of February every year. Despite these challenges HCC engineers successfully completed the project.

Both Sainj and Kashang Hydro Power Projects are registered as ‘Green Power Projects’ under the clean development mechanism.
